ANIMAL SHELTERS/FOSTER PROGRAMS/RESCUE GROUPS
Thousands of cats live in shelters across the country. Each
precious one is waiting for the chance to love somebody--maybe
you. Checking out this list of shelters might be the first
step in finding the perfect feline friend.
The following list includes two kinds of shelters: those
that have met the requirements for the American Humane
Association's Standards of Excellence Program (SEP) and those
that follow a noneuthanizing policy.
SEP shelters have met rigid criteria regarding facilities,
staff and community relations. They serve as model
organizations in animal welfare and offer guidelines and
consultations to other animal care and control agencies.
Those shelters marked with a E have indicated to CAT FANCY
in writing that they do not euthanize animals. CAT FANCY
accepts this information in good faith and is not responsible
for a change in that policy. When contacting one of these
organizations, readers are encouraged to confirm that the
noneuthanizing policy is still in effect. Because these
shelters tend to have long waiting lists, be sure to call in
advance.
Shelters marked with an asterisk (*) have indicated that
they can use cents-off coupons for pet foods and supplies.
